Ep.341 The M/V Pothiti Incident

Ep.341 The M/V Pothiti Incident

Published: 6 July 2025

Tonight’s guest comes to us from Athens, Greece. In this firsthand account, Greek radio operator Polo Spentzos recounts an extraordinary encounter in the heart of the Bermuda Triangle. Aboard the merchant vessel M/V Pothiti in the autumn of 1978, Spentzos and his crew witnessed a large glowing cloud-wrapped object and two smaller orbs hovering above the Atlantic, followed by an even stranger phenomenon where time itself began to unravel. Mechanical clocks spun out of control, quartz watches lagged, communication systems failed, and the crew’s bodies slowed as if trapped in a gravitational field. In this rare and deeply technical testimony, Spentzos links his experience not to fantasy but to Einstein’s relativity and the infamous Twin Paradox, while drawing parallels to other disappearances, such as that of pilot Frederick Valentich. Because Polo’s first language is Greek, his testimony has been translated and voiced in English for clarity and accessibility. This is not a story of lights in the sky, but a case of measurable and documented time distortion aboard a real ship, told by the man who lived it.

Shape of Object/s:

  • Primary object:
Large disc-shaped craft — domed top, flat bottom, surrounded by or emerging from a glowing, cloud-like mass

  • Secondary objects:
2 to 3 smaller luminous spheres — described as “soccer ball-sized” glowing orbs, hovering and moving with precision

Date: Early November 1978

Time:

Between approximately 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. local ship time

  • Initial anomalies began just after 3:00 p.m., during the afternoon watch and coffee break

  • Major sighting of the glowing cloud and luminous spheres occurred around 6:00 p.m., as the witness returned to the lounge

  • By 8:00 p.m., the witness experienced severe time distortion — what felt like minutes had actually been hours

  • Event continued into the night, with symptoms (slow reflexes, clock malfunctions, distorted radio signals) observed into the early hours of the next day

Location: North Atlantic Ocean, near the Bermuda Triangle
(Approximately 3.5 nautical miles from M/V Pothiti’s position during voyage from Cuba to Las Palmas, Canary Islands)

Full Timeline of Events – Bermuda Triangle Incident | November 1978 | M/V Pothiti

Prior to Departure

  • Late October 1978:
M/V Pothiti loads cargo (50kg sugar sacks) at ports in Cuba: Puerto Nuevitas, Puerto Matanzas, and Puerto Cardenas.

  • Ship is en route to Algeria, with a planned stop in Las Palmas, Canary Islands.

  • Polo Spentzos, radio officer (“Marconi”), is performing standard communication duties. All systems normal.

Day of Incident – Early November 1978

3:00 p.m. | The First Signs

  • Crew gathers for afternoon coffee break.

  • Weather is calm, sky is clear, ocean flat like glass.

  • Polo is still trying to transmit departure telegrams via radio — all attempts fail.

  • Shipboard clocks and radios begin behaving oddly.

  • No response from any European or American coastal stations.

  • Incoming signals are received at extremely fast speeds — outgoing transmissions are heard extremely slowly (QRQ1000 vs. QRS10).

  • Second officer accuses Polo of miscalibrating the ship’s chronometer — the Captain sides with Polo, saying: “Something else is wrong.”

3:30–4:30 p.m. | Time Acceleration and System Anomalies

  • Ship’s electrician runs in: “The clocks are spinning! Everything’s running fast!”

  • Wind-up clocks and chronometers gain time rapidly.

  • Digital quartz watches, however, begin losing time — up to four hours behind.

  • Analog and digital systems are behaving in opposite directions.

  • All attempts at contact with other ships via VHF and 500 kHz fail.

5:00 p.m. | Dinner

  • Crew sits down for dinner as usual.

  • Polo returns to the lounge shortly afterward.

~6:00 p.m. | The Sighting Begins

  • Polo joins the cook for a game of backgammon.

  • He positions himself to face the ship’s stern and the open sea.

  • Suddenly, a massive glowing cloud appears on the horizon, about 3.5 nautical miles away.

  • Within the cloud, two large glowing orbs are visible — described as 10-meter-wide glowing spheres, like “giant basketballs.”

  • Two smaller spheres, like “soccer balls,” rise up from below the cloud and appear to dock with the larger object.

  • No sound. No visible propulsion. Controlled, deliberate movement.

  • Polo begins to suspect this is not Soviet or American tech — this is something else.

8:00 p.m. | Severe Time Distortion Hits

  • Polo walks from the lounge to the bridge — should take 2 minutes.

  • When he arrives, two hours have passed.

  • He estimates gravitational force affecting them is equivalent to 100 g (vs. Earth’s normal ~9.8 g).

  • He tries to drag a chair — it takes 40+ seconds.

  • He taps out Morse code: only 3 characters in 17 seconds, far slower than usual.

  • His heartbeat feels like 70 beats per 10 minutes, not 70 per minute.

8:30–10:00 p.m. | Crew Begins Failing

  • Second officer and young deckhand appear frozen or sluggish at the helm.

  • Polo yells: “Put it on autopilot — we can’t trust our reflexes!”

  • Crew is instructed not to touch the wheel until after 10:00 a.m. the next day unless another ship is spotted.

  • Third engineer reports:

    • He lit two cigarettes and burned his lips

    • Bilge pump took two hours instead of minutes

    • Physical reflexes aren’t syncing with time perception

  • Polo warns all crew: “Do not touch valves. Do not open taps. Do not trust your senses.”

Overnight (into early morning hours) | Full System Breakdown

  • Polo returns to radio room and documents events.

  • Issues emergency TTT message on 500 kHz:
“Attention: UFO/USO – Twin Paradox – Einstein Relativity – Crew experiencing reduced reflexes, gravitational time dilation…”

  • Receives no immediate response.

Next Morning – ~8:00 a.m.

8:00 a.m. | Outside Confirmation

  • Another Greek cargo ship ahead, also bound for Gibraltar, responds:
“We saw you all night. You weren’t responding. Your crew looked drunk — moving like puppets. We thought something was seriously wrong.”

  • Confirms Pothiti was visible but unreachable — proof of communication distortion.

12:00 noon | Crew Still Confused

  • Chief engineer storms in: “Nothing got done yesterday!”

  • Crew insists: “We didn’t even feel the day pass.”

  • Electrician: “Clocks on the bridge and engine room were spinning fast.”

  • Third engineer: “Digital quartz watches are 4 hours behind.”

  • Polo explains relativity and gravitational distortion to stunned crew.

Post-Event Reflection

  • Polo connects the event to:

    • Frederick Valentich’s disappearance (October 21, 1978)

    • 1978 Kaikoura lights (New Zealand)

    • Einstein’s Twin Paradox and gravitational time dilation

    • Failures of pulse radar, digital systems, and satellite tracking
